The publication Storytelling Pictures: The Paintings of Julian Bell provides the first comprehensive insight into his painterly oeuvre. Written by the art critic David Carrier, the book includes in-depth analyses of the painting series Genesis, When the City Is Built, Plain, and selected individual works.
Julian Bell (b. London, 1952; lives and works in Lewes) started writing about art in the 1990s— he has published several monographs and regularly produces reviews for the London Review of Books and the New York Review of Books—but has actually made art since the 1970s. Influenced by the Old Masters and modernist painting, Bell’s work explores fresh perspectives on everyday life. Biblical narratives, urban life in London, and the natural landscape of Sussex, where he lives, supply him with motifs. The painter’s style is indebted to the very artists about whom he writes as an art critic.
